Why per-invoice pricing works for compliance infrastructure
Updated 2026-08-01 · 4 min read
Seat pricing punishes growth and per-tenant pricing punishes small clients. For compliance infrastructure, the honest unit is the thing being produced: a compliant invoice.
The unit matches the value
A partner earns when their client issues invoices. Charging per exported compliant invoice means cost tracks revenue in both directions — quiet months cost less, busy months are already funded.
Mechanics that make it trustworthy
Usage billing only works when partners can verify every line.
- Idempotency keys so retried API calls are metered exactly once
- Sandbox API keys that exercise the full path without generating charges
- An open billing period per partner, updated as events arrive, closed on a fixed cycle
- A usage export that reconciles to the invoice, event by event
What partners should ask for
Before signing any usage-based deal, ask to see the raw event log, the deduplication rule and the closing process. If a provider cannot show you those three things, the number on the invoice is unauditable.
